DOL in Linux

Postby Cisien » Wed Oct 29, 2003 4:54 pm

I know the devs are working on geting the game server to work in linux. but in the meantime, I did my own thing.

VMware, Loading Windows, loading DOL :)

Works quite well, other than a rather huge proformance hit gained by runing windows. but it seems to have better stability then when I ran it on my main computer which I also used to play the game and do other things.

trust me, I've tried. They arent far enough along to support about half of the code that is used in the server. mono is the project name, http://www.go-mono.com is where it can be found at.

mono is the farthest along. there is another one out there.. but I think it's only an apache ASP plugin and doesnt include the code for .net apps. there is also one sponsored by gnome... that one is mono.

last I heard. mono is expecting about 1 year before version 1.0 is out. I hope the key features can be added before then. but for right now, one of the devs is porting the server over to GTK+ for linux use.

You got my attention Cisien; Good work!

Tell me, how does this VMware work with DirectX and games designed for Windows XP? First time I heard of it. WINE is depressing. Maybe VMware could lift my spirits. :D

uhh.. well... it doenst

Wine and Winex are your best option for runing windows apps in linux. it has least proformance hit. VMWare you are loading an entire operating system onto another. it's useful for thoes 2d apps that you just cant get working with wine (or mono, in this case)

Ufff... the best to do is when a SOLID version for win is out and you transform Managed C in something like C++ :P

I was wondering if there was any work on the linux server (under mono and gtk+) or which dev was working on that as I might be able to help.

Hey, it's not professional to use an emulator to run DOL!
The only way is doing a bit of changing to implemente GTK+!
BTW GTK+ runs in windows too
