I thought a Rubix Cube for Christmas would be the perfect gift. But new graphics for DAoC would be awesome. I should commend a thanks to Silakka. :D

Damn when did DOL fill up with haters..... I was going to write a long winded reply but I realize it isn't really worth it
Well its sad but what he is saying is true. It looks awesome, ofc, and i also took a moment to think about if if would be possible. But it is not.

You would have to write a whole new client, it has been said, client is more than just the engine. And the models are copyright protected. I guess creating a whole new game would be easier.

If its about engine or graphics in general it depends on mythic and i doubt that we will ever see something like that in daoc.
By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes.

Firstly, thanks Silakka thanks for the amazing proof of concept. Secondly, why does everyone think this is an impossible feat? Please just list them so I could debunk it. Moving past that, I'm sure you could scale the graphics like you can in any other game. It would be giving people who have the ability to play the game in such glory the ability to!

Impossible ? no.

Irrealist ? perhaps.

Imho, with the actual population, i don't see mythic buying this game engine - given at 500,000 USD -. If we even consider the price of 300k$, well, i sadly don't see in their announcements a project that could use cryengine2 (because, i assume the buy 'd not be really correlated to daoc but for another game that could use it, and by extension, for the actual products :) if they have the manpower and the funds to integrate with DAoC).

Second option, wrapping API call to cryengine2 instead of gamebryo. Why not ? with Direct3D interface, it should rather be easy, but not sure the other client parts 'll interact correctly, and there is also a licensing problem (buying crisys and you can use the engine for an other game ? mmh). More, i can remember Glide (3Dfx api) was wrapped to use directX api. Now with directx normalisation, should be easier.

Well, let's see ! the positive point is the design is done and working (and the art part is consequent in a game). This is only a matter of engine !

edit: on internet, the price are given from 500k$ to 1M$.

(buying crisys and you can use the engine for an other game ? mmh).
Buying Crysis gives you tools to create own mods and maps to Crysis, and my conversion is just Crysis map.
I don't think Crysis itself can be modified use as game client to something else.
And I think this is money (and maybe time) issue for Mythic, even new Gamebryo version with updated 3D assets might be too much in current status.

i don't think it's impossible. forget what i said of mythic lol they would to pay a lot of money. and don't think they going do that look to mass effect of bioware they use the Unreal Engine while they have some nice graphics to. but when putting crytek engine in daoc then there will be everyday lag i'm sure of that. it will a lot more worse.

btw some games uses it others engine. cuz making an engine is a lot more then creating a game normally i heard.
and not opposite. And a game is old when it's longer then 3 years. look to Bethesda they made fallout 3 in 1 year or longer and next year they have a new game which is quite fast. they said next year to in 2011 or 2010 the next oblivion will come dunno it's name yet.

I personally don't think that Mythic will use this. Simply because all the bright people left for WoW.

Awesome, I must be one of those stupid people because I do not play WoW constantly.
I guess that is why DOL was able to build a emu and keep it running huh?

3D Engine won't kill game play, it's graphics team which kill it.
Currently without pushing extra grass layers and eye candy, I can easily get about same or higher fps than DAoC have.
And still Crysis give me dynamic lightning and really nice water effects, which Gamebryo don't give .. at least in DAoC.
Also I like to see what Gamebryo/Emergent can do, but as they don't provide any tools to really test something without paying huge amount of money, I'll continue using Crysis as my experiment platform :)
