I received a mail and will forward here for anyone that could be interested.
Hello,
I have an odd question for you. I played a mythic game back on aol in the late 90's and early 00's called splatterball. I am looking for someone to help setup a simple server side of the game. We have a small community on facebook that would love to see the game back online. If you would be able it help at all, it would be appreciated. If you don't have time or desire to help, I understand. Could you put me in contact with someone who is able to work on such a task?

Got the same message, though it really just looks like a bitch todo since the live servers are defunct.
If they really wanted it back it would be easier to rewrite the thing today in a modern engine like Source or something similar.
Or...
A minecraft mod would probably work as well, reskin the arrows to paintballs and etc.

Thanks for the replies. I have attempted to contact the correct party who own the rights to the game, but they aren't responding. I am not a programmer. How difficult is it to make a project like this happen? Ephemeral commented a bit on the difficulty, but on a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being impossible? Also, how much time would it take for an experience programmer who is proficient in the native language of the game to complete it(by it, i mean keeping the same game engine but developing the server side)? I could send some files over so someone could give me an idea of what the project consists of. ANY help is appreciated.

you could have a programmer who is awesome but without reverse engineering knowledge for packet manipulation that programmer is useless.
so honestly the scale would be 50

Thus why I mentioned in this thread you should just remake it in a modern game engine (Mod HL2 multiplayer?) but seeing as you have no programming experience its not so much a difficulty scale you have to think about; its more of an impossible thing unless you find another person who is a programmer, and has a passion for this game.

Or try and make the mod for a game engine that is already geared towards people with little prior computing skills - like udk or something similar

Use Unity, simple... has C# scripting support, been making a small little space game in it lately and it's very good if you don't want to deal with a lot of the crap.
It could kinda work in Minecraft ... but it would be a pain distributing it to all the players.. fingers crossed the official modding API will be out by the summer then it will be a lot easier

Except its a multiplayer game, and I don't think those engines have support for that; thats very nice?
If he wanted something easy like that I'd have to suggest a garry's mod, gamemode; since that's just lua and resources with plenty of tutorials and such.

Although I havent looked at it, I'm fairly certain UDK has multiplayer support built straight into it - remember they made an unreal tournament game in it
Garrys mod would mean people have to own garrys mod to play it. Swings and roundabouts ^^

Yeah but gmod is stupid cheap
Additionally it would pull new people into the game rather then just the old nostalgic type (Though most of the people on gmod need to be lobotomized, but still.)
