Thoughts on system specs?

I was just wandering what sort of performance goals the project has?
Generally speaking most people running a server will do so on a 1MB cable line. Providing for < 70 MS round trip time in the continental US.
a 2 GHZ mchine with 512 MB is the prob an average machine although extra memory will be an easy upgrade.
Do you think we can support 100 users? a 1000?
I have been playing with 3.0b code and have prioritized some of the real time movement commands to try and speed up some of the jerky running I have seen. I am not sure it is better though.

I know we can support 100 users... as far as how much is used from the CPU I have no clue off the top of my head.

Well collecting performance metrics and code optimization are prob the last stage of development anyway. I would imagine bandwidth might be the limiting factor on a completed version of the system. Does .NET use multiple threads for each user connected?

About the jerky running in 1.3b code. This is because we used TCP to move the characters. On the live servers this is done with UDP packets. When we released 1.3b we didn't have the UDP implemented. But the next release will have it ...

PS: Yes, multiple threads per sending/receiving of data ... all in non-blocking mode

I believe Mythic runs a Cluster of servers. 1 for Alb, 1 for HIb, 1 for Mid, 1 for Dungeons, and 1 for SI. I would think it would provide for much larger worlds if a single login server could authorize users to multiple server and have the game engine shift their real time data UDP data streams per /gloc.
Of course I would not personaly want to run 5 servers for expense reasons, but I have 3 friends who have expressed intrest in setting up shared servers.
And my guess is that the patch server would be there for custom content (ruining your official load).

Here you can see some pictures of an italian server (Vortigern or something).
Here and
here you can see the division into alb, mid, hib and dungeons.
I can't imagine that DOL (or CoAD) will ever support more than 1000 players...and most people even have not the hardware for this.
Here in germany most people have A-DSL (768 down, 16 up), and with 16 kb/s upload it's impossible to be a host for so much connections.

You didn't understand me.
I spoke on PayPall to suggest a way.
If I want to open a free server to play users, if they like a better server, or if they have some honesty, they donate

I really like this great project but im afraid to say that im sure that it wont survive very long, because Dark Age of Camelot is a Game which u only can play by 300 or more players
per realm (otherwise it makes no fun and lvling is HELL). I dont think that anyone here have a server which can take this and im also sure that we wont get so much players even if we have a server. Sure theres a way to get all this...if this project is really legal in every case, it can steal thousands of players from US and Europe who would pay to establish a very big server...u must only find a way to speak to them

Advertise on the big Fansites or sth...make this project commercial ! (but not how GOA do with their 12€ payment per month ^^) Thats my opinion about it...

Na, I think we can search sponsors... or with advertise we can say at ppl "If you want a big free server, can you sacrificate a bit of money for the Hardware instead to pay 12€ for a mouth?"

if we could steal players from the original Servers, they would pay at theri free will to establish a good server because otherwise they have to pay the 12€ @ goa =)
