DAoC Portal Site v2.0 Released

We've released the updated DAoC Portal site, it now looks a little more presentable, and in keeping with the DOL styles. Work has now begun on updating the sites functionality, we will be trialing a few features shortly, such as:

News Posting system
Discussion will have to be held on whether we will want just official news, such as DOL / DAoC Portal related, or server related, such as patch notes for servers, or event announcements, to build a better community spirit as a whole.
News Commenting system
Give the ability for users to comment on news posts, expressing their feelings, such as this post here, this would be written from scratch, there is no need to use a forum system for now.
[Completed] Server Detail system
Display details of servers, even when they are offline, frees up space on the server list page.
[Completed] Server Tracking system
Track servers uptime, and the players that are on throughout the days, this is one of the top priority items, as it's one of the easiest to implement, as it requires no action on the part of server admins.
Server Herald system
Display player statistics for individual servers, this one does make me worry about resources though, the thousands of records that would be needed, but this is one of the lower priority items as most servers have their own heralds currently.
Community Forum
A global place for all DAoC freeshard players to get together and chat.

Some points for discussion:
- Do we want DAoC Portal news displayed on this site? Dawn of Light does run DAoC Portal now, so I don't see why not. By displayed I am thinking about a new forum in this announcements section for it, this would also then allow us to generate news on the front page of DAoC Portal, and allow for comments, as specified in the wish list.
- Do we want a community forum on DAoC Portal? Do people even want to talk together about playing, or should we keep people seperated on their own shards forums? People mention DOL already existing as such a platform, but we don't get much playing discussion here.
- If we wanted a community forum, where would we have it? Would we have it on the DAoC Portal site, or would we have it as a subsection on the Dawn of Light site?
- Server herald system, a controversial topic for sure, this would require even more data to be saved on the web hosts database, and we may have to be careful with the new player count tracking system which generated hundreds of records a day.

Awesome job, looks great!!!

Quick question, is there a way to see which version of DAoC Portal is currently available so you know before downloading?

I haven't opened up the DAoC Portal source code in a while, so I can't say for certain if there is a version tracked somewhere, but certainly it has the ability to notify you when a new version is released, so if your existing client doesn't tell you to update, then you don't need to update.

Is it me or is the Daoc Portal down as a whole right now? Or is it just a very strange coincidence that every server is down:)+s

Thanks,

Rezinya

P.S. If it is down does anyone know the ip and port that the Official Dawn Light server is on. Thanks again

what i would like to see is a long-time-statistic about the overall players on all servers together. To see if the number of players playing on Freeshards is rising or falling.

regarding the portal... mh.. just now I've read a server in the list named "[Classic] Merlin RvR". Well, since "Merlin" is the name (coincidence?) a LIVE CLASSIC server, may we accept such names as server name in the list? I would suggest to apply an asterisked filter for the live servers' name.

How about a link to the portal site from this site? If it exists I can't find it ... which doesn't mean much. :)

Ha, I found it. *sigh* nevermind.

Now the portal is sorted by the types of servers and then players. So, the first servers are the official ones. Soon, we will release the new daoc-portal (and the old will become outdated) and you will see. Check out daocportal.net for a better look at it.
